 THE JOB OF A SCRIPT

A script, what is it? They are a fundamental part of a production and create the main storyline. Scriptwriters job descriptions are typically stated as producing your own ideas and screenplays and aiming to sell those ideas to agents and producers.

Ways scriptwriters can get hired

One way you can get hired as a scriptwriter is through writing competitions that are run by broadcasters and regional agencies when looking for new talent, however getting into scriptwriting fails to be an easy task as it is an extremely competitive industry.

A second way you can get hired as a scriptwriter is through blacklist, this is a list comprised of the best unproduced scripts, through this process you can pay for a professional reader to review your script and give them a numerical rating and if good enough it will go up on the blacklist.

The third way you can get into the scriptwriting scene is through fellowships which are scriptwriting programs that studios and networks will scout out talented up and coming writers to groom for later years however this is an extremely competitive route and require letters of recommendation, two sample scripts and an original script.

Game writters:compsose story lines for videogames as well as develop their stories this also includes making dialog for characters and background details for that character too.

Radio: They create scripts for podcasts and other radio related work such as podcasts and capital extra

How do they ensure that legal and ethical considerations are met?

Before writing scripts, ethical considerations are met through industries extensive research on topics that their media will affect such as ethnic constraints as things in the media can affect how people feel and think and legal considerations are met through having people survey law such as organisations such as ‘asa’ that investigates complaints and monitors content to ensure they stick to the rules.

Legal considerations

  • Watershed-shows that might be unsuitable for children to view after 9am important as the scriptwriter needs to be aware of what they can write due when it is going to be broadcast

  • Plagiarism-the act of copying somebody's work and passing off as yourself and this is important as it allows the scriptwriter to create original pieces of work and avoid a lawsuit

  • Obscenity-anything offensive such as swearing or sexual innuendo as a scriptwriter this is important as it allows you to become more aware as to who your audience is

  • Defamation-the action of portraying somebody as something that they are not this is important to a scriptwriter because it ensures that they do intensive research

Ethical considerations

  • Blasphemy-this is any content that may be offensive toward God or religion, and this urges the scriptwriter to become more aware and sensitive

  • Offensive content-content that would offend, insult or anger somebody, this is important for scriptwriter because this makes sure their content is less likely to be criticized harshly

  • Censorship-the suspension of speech, actions or communications that may offend or harm others this is important to a scriptwriter because it makes sure that they keep their ideas civil and uncontroversial

Case study 1

An example of a scriptwriter from the tv and film sector is Charlie Brooker, who is most famously known for his work in black mirror which is an anthology of SCI-FI based works, Charlie Brooker started his career as a cartoonist, he produced adverts for the second hand shop CEX at the beginning of his career and he soon moved on to becoming a journalist for PC Zone.

In his early years he had written for brass eye, the eleven o’clock show and lastly Nathan barley and Charlie Brookers screenwipe,in 2011 was when he started his journey on his most popular work black mirror and then after a quick increase in ratings Netflix had picked it up, he later went on to win five Emmy awards

The ideas behind his works revolve around the idea that the late 1960s were centred around the SCI-FI genre, he wanted to write a story about people who weren't constantly looking at screens as this would provide a nuanced and raw viewpoint.

Charlie got into scriptwriting as a teenager when he started working as a writer and cartoonist for a comic called Oink! After attending Wallingford school, he went on to the university of Westminster where he studied for a BA in media studies, he also helped write the show brass eye

His show has gotten a Peabody award and three consecutive primetime Emmy awards for outstanding television movies

Charlie Brookers says acknowledgment of his terrible first drafts are an essential to writing

Charlie Brookers agents are Jo Unwin and previously Amie yavour.

Case study 2

My second example is Raphael bob-waksberg the Californian writer, born august 17th has had a colourful life, he was originally an American comedian but slowly developed to being a writer, producer, actor and voice actor, he is popularly known for being the creator of the show BoJack horseman, but he has done works such as undone.

He had grown up known as a sort of class clown, described by teachers as having a subtle wit about him and therefor he had adopted this and it stayed with him, he had attended bard college in New York for playwriting, he was roommates with another aspiring show maker, and he had then gone on to become a sit com writer.

Growing up Rafeal was influenced by shows such as the Simpsons, the Larry sanders show and Seinfeld, enticed by the ideas of shows having a type of satirical sadness to them, this had stuck with him while he was witing BoJack horseman.

He has won a ready wit award and an Annie award, and his two former agents are Rachel Rusch and Jhon Garvey.

Demands and requirements

Three ways scriptwriters develop their skills within their sectors:

  • Game writers: Marketing is an important part of game development as it is very hard to sell your ideas in this sector therefore it is important to find promotional opportunities. at every chance they get.

  • Game writers also need to have extensive knowledge of coding as it is another important skill in that sector

  • Gaining experience by working alongside other game writers

In summary the roles and responsibilities of scriptwriters across sectors are generally to create compelling plots that will appeal to their audiences, depending on the specific sector for example radio, their demographic is a wide range of people as this sector produces mass media therefore they would have to very precautious in order to abide by all the ethical and legal considerations in order to avoid a lawsuit, it. is very important that a scriptwriter meets all the requirements they need to as it could help them with building their portfolio and it makes sure nothing is damaging to their reputations otherwise, they would not get hired.
